Plenty of scope for promotion for nurses

Nick Warren has been working for Northamptonshire Heathcare NHS Foundation Trust since 2011. He joined as a staff nurse at St Mary’s Hospital, after relocating from Bradford with his partner. He was promoted after seven months to charge nurse, and after 18 months was appointed as ward matron at Berrywood Hospital.

Nick says, “I’m really happy in my current role and have been ward matron for four years.  The Trust is very good at giving employees opportunities. If you want to progress you can. The culture is all about promoting those who prove themselves, rather than those that have been here the longest. The Trust has an honest and direct approach and is very transparent.”

Nick believes the career opportunities for doctors and nurses at the Trust are very good, and that people are treated like individuals when it comes to career development.

He says, “It’s not a one size fits all approach here. Some people go down the clinical skills route, whereas others prefer the managerial route. There is plenty of scope for promotion no matter what direction you wish to go in career wise.”

Nick lives in Kettering, which is an hour from London. He says the area offers cheaper housing than areas nearer the capital, and that its nice place to live.

He says, “Kettering is pretty central in the UK with great transport links to both London and Birmingham, which is ideal. I live near Wicksteed Park, which is great for family days out.

“The University has a greatly improved nurse training faculty and we have had some very good student nurses from there. I think if more people knew how great a location this is more nurses would consider living and working here.”
